OXFORD, Mich. — Relume Technologies has partnered in a new street lighting and roadway reconstruction project in Pontiac, Mich., that won the Project of the Year Award from the Michigan Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA).

The Baldwin Avenue Reconstruction Project, just north of downtown Pontiac, involved replacing a one-mile stretch of roadway and sidewalks and installing 36 new Relume LED cobra-head street lamps.

"The city is trying to find innovative ways to cut costs and this new lighting technology promises to help us do that," says Allan E. Schneck, Pontiac’s director of the department of public works. The new LED lights provide increased energy efficiency, longer lamp life and lower maintenance costs compared with traditional lighting methods. Relume LED products can cut electric bills in half by significantly reducing energy use. A recent Relume LED conversion in the city of Battle Creek, Michigan resulted in an 81 percent savings on annual electric costs and a savings of over $60,000 annually in materials, labor and maintenance.

APWA Project of the Year awards acknowledge management and administration excellence in public works projects by recognizing alliances between managing agencies, contractors, consultants and their cooperative achievements. The Baldwin Avenue Reconstruction Project won in the "less than $5 million" range of the transportation category.
